Derby City Council
United Kingdom - 233 000 inhabitants

Presentation of the organisation:

Derby is a thriving city at the heart of England. Part of the East Midlands, the city is the starting point of the Derwent Valley Mills World Heritage Site and home to international companies such as Rolls-Royce, Toyota and Royal Crown Derby.

The City Council continues to be rated among the best in England and Wales by the independent Audit Commission, which has awarded it four-star status - the highest possible.

The Council provides all local government services to the people who live in Derby, including schools, social services, environmental health and transportation.

It works closely in partnership with other agencies that provide services for the 233,000 people who live in the city, such as police, health trusts and voluntary organisations. The Council also plays a major role in how the city is developed for the future through Cityscape.

Actions implemented in the field of building performance:

We are currently working with the Carbon Trust and Derbyshire County Council on the Local Authority Carbon Management Programme. The programme is designed to provide benchmarks for our carbon emissions and provide a Startegy and Implementation Plan that will set reduction targets and methods of achieving them.

Our Energy Policy aims to minimise the environmental impact of services by reducing consumption and wastage of energy and water and by promoting the use of renewable sources of energy. New building and refurbishment projects incorporate energy efficient systems eg condensing boilers, comprehensive heating system controls, lighting controls and energy efficient lamps. Design solutions will aim to reduce the consumption of fossil fuels and make best use of renewable sources of energy and combined heat and power. The Council is actively pursuing funding for energy-saving measures from external sources, for example European funding and utility suppliers.
