The Gharb Local Council is the Local Government of Gharb established in 1993 in virtue of the Local Councils Act XV of 1993. Gharb has an area of 15 km sq. and a population of approximately 1300. Amongst others the Council is responsible for the cleaning within the locality – refuse collection, street cleaning, public conveniences, street lighting, repair and upkeep of streets and pavements, issuing of permits for activities which need a permit from the Local Council and local enforcement. The Local Council works a lot in the social and cultural fields organizing outings, educational courses and cultural events throughout the year. The Gharb Local Council is officially twinned with Gerano (Italy) and has recently signed a Town Twinning Agreement of Intent between Torrent (Spain) and Gharb and Zebbug (Gozo, Malta).

Actions implemented in the field of building performance:

As a Local Council we are exploring new possibilities to implement energy efficiency measures within our locality. At the moment some
people are using double glazed windows and solar water heaters. The method of building used is also meant to help in energy efficiency.
