De son ancienne appellation "La Ville Rouge", on a déduit une origine gallo-romaine.
Certains historiens pensent que la commune était traversée par la Voie Romaine de Rennes-Avranches suivant une ligne, La Victoire-La Bretèche-le Chemin des Melliers-Les Hautes Ruelles et l'actuelle Route de Saint-Germain sur Ille. L'existence d'un camp romain à 1,5 km au nord du bourg est contestée et il pourrait s'agir des restes d'une ancienne carrière.
Par contre, des objets de l'âge de bronze et des objets romains ont été trouvés au siècle dernier dans l'ancienne carrière de calcaires marins près de la Noé.
Des calcaires marins ? Mais oui, ils sont les vestiges de l'envahissement par l'océan, à l'ère tertiaire, de ce qui deviendra un jour le bassin de Rennes !
On les retrouve à Saint-Jacques-de-la-Lande, Guipel, Saint-Aubin d'Aubigné...

La commune adhère au Conseil Energie Partagé (CEP) pour bénéficier des services d'un "homme énergie ".
Son rôle :
- Gérer l'énergie par un suivi des factures, une étude des contrats, une vérification de l'adéquation des besoins.
- Réduire les consommations à confort identique
- Accompagnement technique de la commune dans ses projets de bâtiments.
- Animer des actions dans les communes, en sensibilisant les usagers, en formant les techniciens et en conseillant les élus pour leurs programmes d'aménagement.
-Accompagnement de la commune à l'ouverture des marchés de l'énergie.
