At a recent open day at Bristol’s CREATE Environment Centre the Lord Mayor
of Bristol presented children from Summerhill Infants School with special
Green Finger certificates thanking them for participating in a "CYBER"
energy audit of their school - 1 of 10 Bristol schools that took part.
Since undertaking the audit in January the school has made great strides in
cutting their energy waste by following some of the recommendations made in
their "Energy Action Plan" produced after the results were collated. The
report included energy saving ideas from the children who carried out the
surveys and identified problem areas such as overheated classrooms and
lights and computers left on during playtimes and lunchtimes.
Simple measures were carried out to address these problems like appointing
classroom monitors to make sure the lights were off when the rooms were
empty and reducing the heating temperature by 3 degrees. In addition the
School is hoping to have photovoltaic panels installed so that it can
generate some of it’s electricity needs from solar power.
