In a recent TV report, the Swiss town of Mendrisio illustrated how their participation in the Display® Campaign has aided efficient energy management of their public buildings.
The Swiss Canton of Ticino (located in the Italian part of Switzerland) has set itself the objective of reducing its buildings’ energy use by 30% within 20/40 years. Currently, the building sector consumes 30% of the total energy used in Ticino.
The town of Mendrisio is already one step ahead, using Display® posters as a tool for managing energy use. The town counts 63 public buildings, the energy bill of which amounts to CHF 830,000 a year (more than € 670,000). But as explained in the TV report, the energy performance of their buildings is not a kept secret.
Mendrisio’s energy manager Mario Briccola
Indeed, for more than 2 years now, the town has been displaying the energy performance of its public buildings for everyone to see. Posters made in the framework of the Display® Campaign show how the buildings are rated (from A to G) as regards energy, CO2 and water. Mendrisio’s energy manager Mario Briccola says it has many advantages. Display® helps raise awareness amongst the buildings’ users, who have turned out to be very curious about the energy performance of the places they are used to coming to. Moreover it allows for real energy savings: “For us, this is a tool for managing our public building stock”, says Mario Briccola. “[…] It allows us to make comparisons and to know where we can save energy.”
A great inspiration for all municipalities!
