School Cuts Electricity Consumption by 15% using Earthpill
Earthpill is a free community web-site for sharing power meter reading information so that all of us can save money and reduce our CO2 emissions (www.earthpill.com). Display® members will find this tool interesting as they will be able to obtain detailed electricity consumption measurements for specific buildings. They should be inspired by St Mary’s Junior School in Hornsey, North London, UK who saved 1,200 pounds per year using Earthpill. They itemised and measured every electrical item in the school using the Earthpill web-site and produced totals which showed that 67% of the consumption was due to lighting. This led to the school applying for and being awarded a grant to fit Passive Infra-Red (PIR) occupancy detectors to all rooms. The school’s site manager has calculated that this will save them 10,000 kWh per year which is around 15% of their total electricity use.
